sorry vegetarians

we spent part of the weekend volunteering on the last day of a multiple month project- the building of a community playground in seward.

the actual construction began last monday and ended (largely) on sunday.
it was an amazing undertaking and those playground organizers ought to be mighty proud of themselves.
not only does seward now have, arguably, the most amazing and picturesque playground for their children to play in, but the community came together in droves, for months, which speaks volumes about a quirky little port town and its people.

its still trying to be "spring-like" down there. there are only hints of green grass and buds on the trees, and our friends still have feet, (multiple, no joke) of hard crusty snow in their yard.

this only aided my burgeoning allergies by giving me respite for a day, but what a wonderful day off it was.
it all started here. (for us anyway)
at the time we didnt realize this is what they had in mind...
mmmmmm... truly sorry my veggie friends.
it was very tasty.
i resisted the photo of its head, severed with the apple in its mouth.
you can thank me for that.

it was a sprint to the finish yesterday.
jeff was deemed a "skilled worker".
look at him demonstrating his prowess on the old table saw. (i think thats a table saw).
i didnt get a "skilled" name tag- but did get to haul and spread mulch (lots of it), to paint, (see those pretty blue posts on top of the tower?) and help make the emblem for the front of the fire truck.
it was a gratifying experience and we will definitely be utilizing the playground during our seward weekends for sometime to come.

there were (what felt like) hundreds of kids there to try it all out. but here are the two cutest. dont you think?

happy mums day

to all the mums in out there, hope you're having a wonderful day!

i was treated to breakfast (nothing tastes better than breakfast made by someone else!)
and this amazing hanging basket.
hope i can keep it alive until the next full moon, when its safe to hang outside full-time.

we've been busy today with some spring cleaning chores. i cleaned out the rock garden, dug out a fire pit and jeff and jade finished a laborious deck job started last fall. now we're are enjoying the sunshine and breeze on this spring day in alaska.
i found this little nest in the clean-up.
the flowers are bloomin' on the window sills. i planted these way back on superbowl sunday. they made it through and are oh so happy now.did i mention the leaves are about to bust?? looky here:cheers!

weekend

i dare say we've turned the corner on this spring thing.
sand hill cranes are here feeding in the fields, the moose are more brazen than they were a few months ago, marching right by us in the yard to get to the new fresh little buds beginning to emerge.

the snow on the talkeetnas is rapidly melting exposing huge swaths of brown.
my coworker has seen bear scat. not something you want to run into this time of year when they are scraggly and hungry.

i have made use of that (stupid) flat garage roof by setting up the greenhouse there. today with strong winds, we are testing out the job jeff did securing it down.
-so far the thing has not taken flight.
i have delightful tomato plants over a foot tall, happy in their 80 degree sauna.
mmmmm. dont you love the smell of tomato plants?

its a lazy weekend here.
