graham cracker

our beloved orange dog has left this world.
we are for the first time in 15 years dog-less, and this makes our house exceedingly quiet and our hearts heavy.
today, there were no ticking claws or creaking joints. no massive sneezing (graham was a sneezer.) no heavy coated, sweet, musty, dog smell permeating the living room.

graham came into my life with my husband. we were a "blended family". i came with porter and the black cat known as PITA. j came with fuzzy, loving, aloof, stereotypically scary, chow mix. but truthfully, graham dog was the sweetest, face licking, deep barkin' chow dog ever loved.

he made mamas move their kids off the sidewalk when we passed, ("you see mikey, that dog has a black tongue, that means he bites"). we always hated this assumption and took every chance we had to correct this misconception about our loving, gentle, chow chow.

the last few months were hard as graham was alone without his brother dog and spent his days with with our baby cat who is needy enough with humans, let alone a slow moving dog.
she was relentless with him, rubbing herself all over his sleepy self. he put up with much more than he should have.
he didnt seem unhappy, simply worn out. still loving and smiling and panting and grateful.
our lives will be forever changed because we had him in them, and now because we are without his sweet, dog devotion.

rest well graham cracker, chow chow biscuit. i will miss you.

artgere....um, i mean artfest

in just over a week, i will be boarding a plane and heading down to seattle, where i hear spring is actually showing its pretty little head.

i am going to artfest with my lovely friend delta.
about 5 or 6 months ago, she told me about the event, and in a moment of pure impulsiveness, i signed up without so much as batting an eyelash.

artfest is held at fort worden in port townsend. it is the site where officer and a gentleman was filmed. my best high school friend sonja and i loved that movie and saw it countless times.

brings back memories, doesnt it??

the area looks beautiful and i'm looking forward to spending some time walking along the chilly coast, snapping photos.

i'll be taking a two day mosiacs class with katherine england. you check out her work here, and a one day class with bee shay.

in my recent realization that this trip was approaching, i began looking online for photos of the fort. unfortunately i came across this site which hints at how the place might be a bit haunted.
hmmmm.
information i could have lived without.

however, despite a ghost or two, the vibe will be good and just what the n.p. ordered.

i hope it jumpstarts some long hidden, creative spark i just know is smoldering somewhere deep, down inside.

sure sign of spring

this long drawn out process known as spring has begun here in alaska. along with moose poop there is plenty of melting dog crap in the yard. (you can thank me for sparing you a photo of that).
luckily, graham is a creature of habit and goes in the same 10 foot radius most of the time.
the poop-pick-up chore will be my favorite one to delegate to jade once he's old enough to be skillful with a shovel and rake.

we are trying hard to enjoy whats left of winter but find ourselves looking forward the long drawn out days of summer. the amount of daylight now has almost reached 12 hours and we are enjoying sunset somewhere around 8pm.
this place is one of extremes.

our first guests of the season have booked their trip to visit us and explore alaska! we are so excited to have kellie and tony coming to see us. these colorado (our next door) neighbors have talked about visiting us since we left. we're going to do our damnedest to make it worth their while!

our tentative itinerary includes visiting seward to hike out to derby cabin on caines head for an overnight; a glacier tour with captain rich; a rafting trip down six-mile creek; (drinking and) hanging out at the talkeetna moose dropping festival; a train ride to denali to back pack for a few days; a stop at either matanuska or exit glacier, and then the two of them will take a road trip to mccarthy to see a friend from high school.
i think this will keep 'em busy.

all is quiet and status quo here. jeff started his new job and is trying to keep his head above water. the clinic is busy as usual. jade is making birthday party plans- dinosaur themed for sure. are all 4 year old boys so predictable?
we are checking off some spring projects here that need doing.
all in all, contented.

got some new tunes on the i-pod. be sure and check out- old crow medicine show, the zutons and ray lamontagne.
mmmm. nice.

just humming

home
is where i want to be
pick me up and turn me round
i feel numb - born with a weak heart
i guess i must be having fun

the less we say about it the better
make it up as we go along
feet on the ground
head in the sky
it's ok i know nothing's wrong

anyone know this song?
(sigh)

marching

please click to appreciate :)

hey music fans, be sure and dig out your old-school leftover salmon tapes and listen to some banjo love this march fourth.
it will make you smile, and tap your toes.
i promise.

a little leap year baby sprung into a lovely, giggly, four year old girl and invited us to her par-tay!
and what a party it was!
there were butterflies fluttering about the enormous stacks of snow. the mermaid smiling even as she was being stalked by the bat decorated with the prettiest of ribbons. and the jumping girl was in all her bouncy glory with all her little friends in tow.
the party was delightful smash.
