love and marriage

i knew it.
after 9 years of marriage, my husband has revealed a huge secret.
he can cook. he is capable of following a recipe, and following it to perfection.
sucker.
life will never be the same here. its all over now!
never again can he say; "but... i dont know how..."
HA!
please, try this at home. it was delectable.

pacific halibut with olives and lemon

2 pounds of alaskan halibut or other white fish
3/4 cup dry white wine (such as sauvignon blanc)
1/2 cup mixed olives
zest from 1 lemon, cut into strips
1 tablespoon olive oil
salt. pepper.
1/4 tea red pepper flakes
1/4 cup fresh flat leaf parsley, chopped

heat oven to 400. place fish in a small roasting pan. (cast iron works nicely) add enough wine (about 1/4 cup) to reach halfway up the sides of the fish. scatter the olives and lemon zest around the fish. drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and both peppers. roast until the fish is cooked through and flakes easily with a fork, about 20 minutes . remove an sprinkle with parsley. divide onto plates and spoon remaining olive and wine sauce over the top.
prepare to take off your clothes...
whoops, did i type that?
mmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

wedded bliss!

we managed a little exodus from the state over the weekend and headed on down to missoula for a lovely wedding. these beautiful people, russ and jen, were married on saturday.
we traveled from anchorage thru seattle and then spokane, renting a car and driving to montana. good god we live far from everything!!

it was nice to get out of the cold rain and head to more familiar- arid and dry conditions. jeff and i noted how strange it seemed to be able to see into the woods. no thick fern or underbrush to block the view.

jen and russ put on an amazing party as they gathered all their friends together to celebrate their special occasion.

the wedding was held at montana snowbowl. this tiny but impressive ski area sits a mere 12 miles from missoula and boasts 5,000 ft base elevation, 7,500 ft. top elevation, 300 inches of annual snowfall, and claims that the longest run is nearly 3 miles. plus, you get all this for a mere $35 bucks. pretty good deal in my book. (fyi, the bartenders pour a stiff drink!)
there is also a small and comfortable lodge with basic accommodations. the majority of the people gathered for the event traveled from out of state so most of us stayed right there on the hill. can you say hangover?

jade made 4 fast friends and ran around the mountain while his parents got to be social for a couple of days.

our friends the rahns from palmer have recently moved to missoula too, so we got to see jenna and hunter which jade thought was pretty cool. we miss them!
the weather was fall beautiful and warm- in the 70's. ahhhhhh. nice weekend.

denali

we have just returned from an incredible journey where we drove the entire length of road into denali national park. as mentioned previously, the park holds a lottery once a year each fall, letting 400 private vehicles enter daily for a 5 day stretch. you are allowed to meander along at your own pace, taking in the scenery with no bus schedule or transportation worries (or whining tourists). you must leave the park by midnight on the day you hold a pass.

this 190 mile journey led us into a tiny portion of the vast and rugged 6 million acres (think size of massachusetts, or half the size of wales) where fall is at its very end and the first signs of winter are encroaching full force.

the park of course, is dominated by the highest mountain on the north american continent, mount mckinley or denali, ("the great one" in athabascan language). measured from the 2000 foot lowlands near wonder lake (our destination at the end of the drivable road) to the highest peaks; at 20,320 feet, the mountains vertical relief of some 18000 feet, is greater than that of mount everest.

the mountain simply reigns over the alaska range, that 600 mile arc of mountains that divide south central alaska from the interior plateau.
we were fortunate enough to have the clouds part and give us a full show of denali in all its amazing glory through most of the drive.
we awoke early on monday morning in healy (12 miles north of the park entrance) and headed to the check- in at 7 am. (no small feat for this family) jade was upbeat at the prospect of seeing animals, especially bears and was eager to get going into the park. we were going bear hunting and he was intent on "shooting them with his camera"

the road was closed the day before due to snow at about the halfway point, (yes folks, snow. no pussyfooting around here. fall is about done). we didnt know if we'd be able to drive all the way in and if a view of denali was to be had, you've got to to make it past polychrome pass. (incidentally, the camping spot jeff and i were in during our 1996 trip here).

here are some photos of arriving at the wilderness access center getting our pass.

we were told by mr. grass (thats him in his early morning mug shot). that the road was closed at tolkat, but the crews were working on it. so off we went.

early morning clouds were abundant, but the promise of clear skys was also evident. heres what it looked like driving in. we were excited!

we made it to the visitors center at the tolkat river by 10 am and after some clearing skys, mountain goat and one big moose, we were told we'd have to wait for the crews to open the road. many cars came and went, turning around and heading out, (we were after all 53 miles into the park). but there we alot of us who just ate lunch tailgate style and waited for the ranger to let us pass on by.

finally at noon the gate was opened and about 25 vehicles poured ribbon like onto the road, spacing out nicely and resuming the drive. it wasnt too far past polychrome outlook to sable pass where we first saw this: an amazing expanse of mountain that cannot be adequately described with either words or by my sophomoric photography skills. none the less, this is a sample of what we saw. beautiful.
you can click to enlarge.
over sable pass and down through thorofare pass we dropped aproximately 2700 feet, arriving back into autumn swept tundra.

keeping watchful eyes for any signs of bear, moose and goat. we arrived at the end of the road around 4 pm. picniced at wonder lake campground where the camp robbers are as aggressive as they are in every other campground in america.

we spotted the bear with several others who were parked along side the road as we were winding our way back out of the park.

as we were heading back up thorofare pass there was this amazing griz hanging around the snow pack, digging around for food. had he meandered back down to lower elevation, there were plenty of dried up old blueberries everywhere, but here is was poking around all this snow. we hung around watching him lumber along the freshly fallen snow until he went out of view.
it was such a thrill. those creatures are beautiful and BIG.
jade didnt stop talking about it all 250 miles home.

overall i have to say it goes down as one of the most amazing and memorable weekends thus far in our alaskan experience.

cheers!

PS although i havent checked- angie over on the link bar was supposed to be going as well and she is an amazing photographer. i'll bet shes got some great photos.

happy dance and witches

well hello blog readers,

here i am at work, barely working which is a nice change and break. i am happy to report that my darling (hunky) husband has booked me a weekend in my colorado home town. i am so excited i can barely stand it. happy dance, happy dance!
for some reason as the summer season draws to an end and we can smell winter creeping around the corner, i am feeling that wistful pull to my friends and the familiar comforts of my old home. until now, the excitement of exploring and living in a place i dreamed of for so long has held me over and i havent let myself go there. now it seems, i have.

so, get ready girlfriends for the witches party is back on- details to come from holleh. dig out your brooms (:

here on the alaskan home front, we have dug into our first home improvement project by pulling up a swath of carpet inconveniently placed directly at the front door. we have replaced it with tile. (again, that darling hunky husband of mine). you cant imagine how thrilled this makes me as carpet is just not my thing. especially someone elses used, yucky carpet.

this weekend we will be heading up to denali national park. we are the lucky recipients of a lottery ticket and its a winning one! leslie of seward scored it for me and for this i owe her big (again!) each year the park holds a lottery in which 400 cars are allowed to drive the length of the road for the specified day you hold a ticket for. this is a rare and amazing opportunity to explore the park at your own pace and distance. normally, the park has a no drive policy and all visitors are shuttled in and out by the parks bus system. my cousin nanette called this bus ride a "death march, but worth it", when visiting in august. i dont have the biggest lens on my camera, but am hopeful to catch sight of some wild things.

hope fall is treating everyone well. its coming to a close like a train pulling into the station up here.

falling

well, a week has passed and a busy week it has been.
jeff is back from a nearly 750 nautical mile journey aboard the s/v tahanan. he and rich had a great trip sailing from seward down to sitka. i am encouraging him to consider a guest post to tell all about it.

the alaksa state fair has come and gone along with alot of our hard earned money. we went twice, once with our seward pals and then again upon jeffs return. jade has been turned on to some pretty grown up rides by his papa, (remember the bob sled thinggy that goes around in a circle, both forward and backward really, really fast?)
sigh......the carousal will never be the same for the little boy..

there is an unmistakable nip in the air and the follage around the house is beginning to turn. fall is upon us. the fireweed is bright red and the birch trees are starting show patches of yellow. it wont be long until i start complaining about the cold again.

we went on a nice hike to grayling lake yesterday, which is just north of seward. jade is a great hiker covering 3 miles with his short little 4 year old legs.

he loves hiking and this delights his parents.
